6  Costs

6.1 Internally

Cost breakdown:

6.1.1 Data:

  • Google maps developer console with access to street view images are free if it is for a non-profit use.
  • Annotated images: I have used people on upwork for a similar task that charge USD 10 and hour. Let’s say that’s two weeks worth of labelling is USD 800 or ZAR 15 000. Commercial labelling platforms charge $0.03 per annotation - say we want 25,000 images that is still 800 dollars.

6.1.2 Labour

I would want to charge 50% of my time for the 10 months of the project starting in April - R20 000 per month for 10 months is ZAR 200,00.

6.1.3 Compute

Colab Pro + (the biggest subscription) is USD 42,25 per month. Say we need this for four months, that’s USD 170 or ZAR 3,000.

6.1.4 Coordination

As Codera I’m sure you want to earn a bit of money and it will take some energy to coordinate. Let’s add 50% of the estimated price on.

Let’s say it looks like this:

Costs Value (ZAR)
Data annotation 15,000
Labour - Jonathan 200,000
Compute 3,000
Coordination 109,000
Total 327,000

6.2 External

The costs associated with undertaking this project will depend on a number of factors, including the scope and scale of the project, as well as the resources required to complete it. Based on the elements laid out in the timeline, the following is a rough estimate of the costs for each section of the project, in South African rands:

Activity Duration Cost (ZAR)
Project scoping discussions with stakeholders 1 month 25,000
Data collection and annotation 2 months 75,000
Model development and training 2 months 100,000
Model testing and evaluation 1 month 50,000
Implementation and analysis 1 month 37,500
Report writing 1 month 25,000
Handover of productionized computer vision model 1 month 25,000
Total cost - 362,500

It’s important to note that these are rough estimates and that the actual costs will depend on the specific requirements of the project. Additionally, the cost of labor, equipment and other expenses may vary depending on the location, availability.
